A Cape Town children's home is going green with the installation of a brand new solar-powered
geyser.
Margaret's House has been looking after orphaned and abandoned children since 1987.
It currently accommodates about 20 young people from troubled families at risk of
becoming street children.
The solar water heater was donated
by the sustainable energy society as part of the
Global Work Party initiative. The annual internet-based event sees people all over
the planet getting down to work to combat climate change in their communities.
Officials at the home said on Sunday they were thrilled with the device as it would
cut their electricity bill in half
House manager Geraldine Engel said the money they save can be better spent on their
work as a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
"Our electricity bill jumped to R2, 500 so o this is definitely going to bring our
bill down and help save, which is what we need. It's something wonderful to help
us as an NGO." she said.
